1 out of 5 stars HP... Never again.   July 24, 2010
TheBuckinghamPalace
This is my 3rd HP printer. I don't know why... everyone I've bought has been terrible. I guess because it always seems like the biggest bang for your buck. They are always running deals at Target, Costco, Walmart, etc... Don't fall for it. HP is a terrible company. If you only use your printer once ever couple of months, this printer might make it through the year. Maybe. Other problems? Oh yeah! The ink cartridges seem so be bone dry after 30 pages or so. I'm pretty sure it would be faster, less frustrating, and cheaper to start using the Kinkos/FedEx store to print out all my coupons. It's also really loud. I would leave the room when it starts printing, but then I couldn't sit in front of it while manually feeding the paper through it in order to prevent paper jams. And there are paper jams. Lots of paper jams! The only part of the printer that worked semi problem free is the scanner. Which I've used maybe three times. The quality was terrible, but it worked. Let me see, did I leave anything out? Well, it's ugly, flimsy, poorly made, and in the end a terrible deal. I'm tired of HP. I know they're a cheaper brand so I shouldn't expect too much of them, but this is the last straw! DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. I started searching Google to try and see if I could fix it myself, and whatayaknow... I have trouble even finding an article with my specific problem because there are SO MANY OTHER POSTS about EVERYTHING ELSE on this printer breaking down, not working, or looking terrible. I really want to know if the people that rated this higher than 3 stars got to use it more than a week before they rated it. Either that, or HP has an entire department of employees hired just to spam good ratings on these sites. Those are the only explinations. So let's sum up: 1) DON'T BUY THIS. 2)If you already have-I'm sorry. I really am... 3)And don't buy this.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Printer!   July 7, 2010

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER! I purchased this printer to use primarily as a copier. I am a teacher and it is very convenient to have a copier in my classroom. In short, the printer stopped working after about ten months. ( It also guzzles ink like crazy!) I spent over two hours on the phone with HP customer service. They were complete morons and kept putting me on hold and asking me the same "troubleshooting" questions. They did everything to avoid giving me a refund, even though the warranty was supposed to be good for a year. I strongly recommend purchasing the extended warranty stores offer just to avoid dealing with HP. HP has the worst customer service ever! I will think twice before purchasing an HP product again.

1) Notice how most (not all, most) reviews praising this worthless ink-guzzler are from people who haven't owned the printer long?
2) Notice how most of the positive reviews are replete with phrases like "just got this printer" or "so far so good"?

I'm willing to bet that NOBODY who has given this printer a + review has owned it long enough to run out of ink.
The ink cartridge life on this printer isn't just bad, it isn't just short--it is outright criminal.

Buy this garbage and you will be paying triple the price you paid for the printer within a year in ink costs alone, assuming an average print load. This printer is a scam in a box that they sell cheap and quadruple their profits through ink sales.

I've owned several HP printers and this one is conspicuously, almost suspiciously, crappy. Hence my term "criminal."

WARNING: YOU CANNOT BUY REFILL INK OFF E-BAY TO REFILL THESE INK CARTRIDGES. YOU CAN BUY THE INK AND TRY LOADING IT WITH THE SYRINGE; I GUARANTEE YOU IT WILL NOT WORK. I've refilled HP ink cartridges on my HP printers with syringe ink from refill kits off e-bay for years. You cannot do it with this one. You MUST buy replacement inks, and yes, you will buy many. Any refill kits you see on e-bay for this printer will not work. The architecture of the ink cartridge is such that it makes it nearly impossible to refill. Yes, you can find the holes. Yes, you can inject the ink. Yes, you can orient it and let it set 24 hours. Then try to print with it. Nothing. Nada. At best you will get some smudged ink come out or be able to print a few pages before it craps out. I've never had this problem refilling HP inks with my previous printers, just this one. This coupled with the fact that the ink life is ridiculously short makes me again use the word "criminal."

PROS/CONS (yes, combined):
1) Print quality is "decent" for a printer this cheap. It is nowhere near the quality of previous HP printers I've owned, which don't cost that much more.
2) Scanner is good but slow.
3) HP Solution Center software has user-friendly GUI, but the start-up system resident crap will bog your resources and slow your computer. Disable it.

I bought this printer as an urgently needed replacement to my old HP that broke down. It served it's purpose when I needed it but has become laughable over time now that I can see what garbage this machine really is. Buy at your own risk. I highly recommend spending $40 more for a better model.

Good product; a value for the money. Prints a bit slower than other HP's, but it's ok for home use.

2 out of 5 stars Screwy right out of the box   June 1, 2010

I do love that this printer can scan. It's been great for scanning my kid's drawings and emailing them to the grandparents. And since this was a gift, I've tried to ignore the other problems. But it DOES have problems. The scanning only works properly maybe 1/3 of the time. I press scan and it only scans a small portion of the original. I do nothing, press scan again, same thing. Try again, and it works. Who knows why. It's been this way since it was brand new. It isn't a big deal when you're trying to scan one thing, but if you have to scan a 10 page document, it's really tedious. And it sucks ink like it's dying of thirst. One black ink cartridge won't always be enough for my husband to print out a manuscript, even a fairly short one. And it does random quirky printer things, like half printing, spitting out unintelligible codes and jamming, but all of my printers have done that, so I expect it. For the casual printer, this might work for you. But if you plan on using it like a piece of actual office equipment, get something else. This just isn't reliable.
